About the Exhibition
First released in 1995, Ghost in the Shell has profoundly shaped global conversations about artificial intelligence, cybernetics, and human identity. Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, it remains one of the most influential works of science fiction worldwide.

In this show, I trained a custom AI model on my own face and body — not to reconstruct my real past, but to generate a fictional childhood that never existed. From this, three threads emerge:
Fabricated memories: video works from this imagined past.
Speculative futures: what might happen if Ghost in the Shell’s world kept accelerating.
Immersive installations: sculptural CRT screens and a holographic interrogation chamber where memory, fiction, past, and future collapse into one experience.
As Offline Gallery director Mika Bar-On Nesher describes:
“Ghost in the Shell foresaw the dissolution of boundaries between mind, body, and machine. Kusano reanimates that vision through the lens of AI and digital ritual.”
And in the words of guest curator Yohsuke Takahashi:
“Kusano fabricates non-existent memories through AI, confronting us with uncanny nostalgia — a reminder of how fragile identity truly is.”
I can’t wait to share this experience with you. If you find yourself in New York this October, I hope you’ll join me in this exploration of memory, identity, and the future of selfhood.
With gratitude,
Emi Kusano ♡

Emi, that's absolutely stunning and great news! Congratulations!
